Dwarf race gives you the ability to take on stone form, increased critical strike rating with guns, resistance to frost damage, allows you to find extra archaeology fragments and survey faster and also gives you increased expertise with maces.

Night Elf race gives you the ability to fade into the background, makes you less likely to be hit, wisp form when dead for faster movement, increased nature resistance and faster movement when stealthed.

Worgen race gives you periodic movement speed increase, increased critical strike chance, resistant to nature and shadow damage and an increased skinning skill and speed.

From the above list you should be better equipped to choose the race of your mage making use of the most relevant racial benefits.

Your new mage character will allow you to do massive dps and depending on the spec that you choose you will be set up for either burst damage, continuous damage or crowd control abilities. The 3 specs available are fire, arcane and frost. Fire allows maximum burst damage so that you can kill things quickly. The arcane spec is more balanced and increases your damage with all types of magic, but focuses on mainly doing more damage consistently. Frost spec for a mage allows you to become a master of crowd control which will allow you to take on groups of enemies and win.

There are a variety of very useful specific abilities for the mage class including the ability to teleport and create portals to the main cities. Mages can also make their own food and water to replenish health and mana. They also have a buff that gives a boost to intellect and the ability to blink which allows the mage to instantly jump forward and out of harms way. Mages also have the ability to polymorph enemies taking them out of the action for a short time.

The mage character is a fun character to play and is always welcome in groups due to the massive damage and crowd control abilities. The extra benefits of the buff and the constant supply of food and water only make life better for the mage and their group.
