Poker Play: An Effective Strategy At Any Level

I never had an interest in gambling until I moved to Vegas. I was living in the suburbs of Chicago and working as a kitchen manager of a downtown restaurant. I never had time to socialize since work seemed to take up all my time. I was usually too tired from the long days of managing the restaurant. My wife and I were in the process of building a house in a brand new development. After our house was built, we made the decision to moved to Vegas. The timing was perfect, there was a housing boom in full force at the time and we bought our 2nd home at a great price. I moved out ahead of my wife for the purpose of finding work in the restaurant business. She was a registered nurse and was guaranteed work at a very nice hospital. Everything was good, or so I thought. Still unable to find a job at that point, we both eventually settled in our new home in Vegas and sold our house in Chicago and then divorced. I was single and jobless. I went through a few meaningless jobs before I landed a job dealing poker at Binion's Horseshoe during The World Series of Poker. I had a natural love for the game and was intrigued by the math involved in poker. My fascination with being able to get good "reads" on people led me on a pursuit to learn all I could about body language and the math behind poker.

I have always had an interest in understanding people. I studied psychology at Middle Tennessee State University in the early 90's. I have spent the last 11 years studying body language and facial expressions to better understand peoples' personalities. It has led me down a completely different path than I had anticipated. My aim is no longer to improve my poker game but to use research and studies to help myself and others understand personality.

Poker was originally played by groups of guys getting together for a "friendly" game of cards. Games were held in inconspicuous back rooms, dimly lit, where going "all in" could cost you more than the money on the table. There was always the threat of being raided by police, mugged by gunmen or both. It wasn't until Benny Binion moved poker to the gambling mecca now known as Las Vegas to legitimize what we know as poker. However, today's poker is an entirely different game. From excessive numbers of players to accessibility to information found on the Internet about the game and new and improved methods of play, finding the advantages in poker are becoming scarce.

There are three basic ingredients when it comes to playing poker effectively. The first is understanding the numbers behind poker, in other words knowing poker math. Next, is the ability to read someone's body language. And the third is understanding a person's personality. In this article, I am hoping to show you how these three interact with one another and how you can improve your ability to read others.

The first part to learning poker is the math skills. If you are saying to yourself that you are not good at math, that's ok. With a little logic and common sense, you can understand the fundamentals. Just understand that the math never changes. The statistical chance of drawing a specific card has, is, and always will be a 20 per cent chance. The basic are the percentages or probability of making your hand. For example, when I was playing consistently, I would look for certain percentages of my hole cards (Texas hold em) before I would get up from the game and try my luck at another table. I know that I should see a pocket pair once every sixteen hands, suited cards once every three to four hands, and suited connectors once every forty-six hands. The big statistic that saves me a lot of money is the issue with pocket jacks. I always thought this was a strong hand, however I learned that when holding pocket jacks, my percentages of a higher card coming on the flop are greater than my chance of getting pocket jacks! Lesson: don't play jacks to strong, you end up a long-term loser. An advanced skill to keep in mind is your expected value. Without going into too much detail about it, it is basically what you expect to get from a given betting session, and armed with this value, helps make your decisions. It's a little tricky and should be reserved for when you move up the poker ladder to then next level of game. For now just focus on the basic percentages. Don't get ahead of yourself. Get the basics down. It wont take you long. It took me about a week to understand the basics, then I was off to the races. Once I had an understanding of basic percentages and EV (expected value) I was still hungry for more. I felt like something was still missing from my game. I found that in my ability to read body language.

The next ingredient is the ability to read someone's body language. The skills you learn here can help you in every aspect of your life. As I continue my research and study in body language, I am still in awe of how this information is not valued enough to be taught in schools. The basic premise to body language is never, and I mean never, take a single body language and make a judgment on just that one trait. Some guys say if you really want to know what someone is going to do on a poker table look at their feet. At their feet? Come on, when I am sitting at a poker table, the last thing I am going to is say, "your all in, can you wait a second, I have to look under the table at your feet and then I can make my decision. " no, I'm afraid this isn't what would happen at a poker table. And it defies our basic rule to take gestures in isolation. The key to body language is to take body language in context. If someone has their arms crossed, it usually means they are being defensive. However, if they are sitting under the air conditioner vent and its 60 degrees in the poker room, it could mean they are cold, not being defensive. This is the best advice I can give you when it comes to reading someones body language. Once you become familiar with the putting body language expressions together in a meaningful way, the more advanced stage is to focus on the face and facial expression. There are more nerve connections between the brain and the face than any other part of the body. The poker face is expressionless, motionless but full of information if you know what you are looking for. There is a lot to facial expressions, too much to cover in this article, but what i can tell you is that your game will drastically improve once you start studying the face and all that it has to offer. Once again stick with the basics, learn to read overall body language, then move to more detailed information in the face.

Once we put these first two together, we have almost completed our poker game. The third and last ingredient is understanding the personality of a person. Poker, at a basic level, is a game about cards. You play cards, you look at cards, and understand the cards. As you progress and step up your game to higher levels, poker becomes a game of observing and understanding people. The cards don't matter as much. Naturally, the best hand wins in a game of poker, but learning the skills to understand body language (in particular, facial expressions) and the type of personalities you are dealing with, is truly what the game of poker is about. It is very important to be able to tell if a person is lying to you. The greatest gift you can have is the ability to not only make good statistical decision, and read their body language, but to baseline the person's personality by what you see and hear at the table. Personality is composed of five key elements. One, the level of intellect. Two, their temperament. Third, their skill level. Fourth, a person's morality. And finally, number five, their attitude. To function highly on all five takes a rather unique individual. And everyone swings on a pendulum from high to low in each area. But knowing this is half the battle. Knowing how to apply this information is the other half. Once you are able to make intelligent decisions based on personality, with enough practiced, can make you unstoppable at any level of play.

These are the three basic ingredients when it comes to playing poker effectively. In this article, my hope was to show you how these three build upon one another and how you can improve your ability to read others and improve your game. First off, learn the math, it wont ever change. It is the foundation to build upon to be good at playing poker at the beginning levels. Next, learn body language skills, emphasize the facial expressions and context. Learn how the facial muscles react to stress and how wrinkles form based on the long-term use of certain muscles. And finally, read someone's personality traits by how they behave at the table, how skillful they are at playing, their level of intelligence and temperament.

By doing these things and becoming a life long student of the game, you should not expect to stay at whatever level you are at. You can improve you poker game and see amazing returns when these principles are applied. A word of caution, once you head down this path, you will see everything in a new light and understand human nature better. Your new found abilities may just lead you into directions you may not expect!

I will end this article with a true, real story. In 2004 I was full-fledged studying, reading body language, and profiling personalities everywhere I went. (I am sorry to those poor clerks at the Smith's on Flamingo). It was new to me then and it seemed as though I could read people at a different, higher level. I could predict how they were going to react based on the things I said and did. It was time to take a chance at the poker table. I had 140 dollars in my checking account and withdrew the money to try my hand at applying this to poker. I played for 31 hours straight, applied all that I had learned at that point and presto, it worked like a charm. I cashed out over 30 times my investment (over 100 dollars per hour) and was able to take home enough money to cover my bills for that month. With the little extra I had, I bought into a satellite at the Mirage a few days later. The WPT kicked off their season that year at the Mirage, so I wanted to test my new strategies at the next level. It was about 200 dollars for the satellite. I won it. Entered another, won it. Entered another, won it. In no time, I won enough money to cover the super satellite into main event that year. They were giving 37 seats that year and I think there were 355 satellite entrants. When they announced we had made to 37, I was about 15th in chips. A ten thousand dollar seat was mine, with only a two hundred-dollar investment. I sold the seat at a very reasonable discount to a friend and didn't play the main event. I took some time off to get better at my skills, and here I am, eight years later. Do I regret not playing? Sometimes. I think about what could have been. But in reality, the matter is I have not looked back on the decision to take a break in regret, and who knows, when the timing is right, you may see me at a final table of a main event someday.

Battlefield 3 Strategy Guide - Why You Need A BF3 Guide

For those of us who have been playing first person shooter games for years a bit of an adjustment is required for the latest and greatest in first person shooter games, Battlefield 3. The major difference is that this game requires you to focus a lot more on teamwork than any of the other games out there. Another major difference is that you actually have to play the part of the class you select. You can't select to be medic and expect to be running headlong into enemies like you would if you were an assault soldier. You instead will have to heal your teammates and make sure they are always battle ready. This type of scenario goes for all of the classes available in BF3. This is exactly why you need a good Battlefield 3 strategy guide to show you how to play the game properly.

That is not the only thing you will learn however. You will also find out the best ways to set up your class as well as your weapon which will allow you to be as powerful as you possibly can be, this gives you a huge advantage over most of the other players out there because they do not know how to setup their character properly. You will also get a complete multiplayer walk through which shows you all of the maps and common enemy travel routes. This allows you to both go behind enemy lines undetected and shows you the best places to setup so you can mow down tons of enemies without being seen. Most BF3 strategy guides also offer a complete single player walk through which will lead you step by step through the single player game showing exactly what to do and when to do it. This allows you to complete the game on the hardest setting with very little effort and frustration.

Some guides even offer HD videos showing you some awesome techniques and tactics which will greatly improve your kill/death ratio as well as your skill level. Most importantly you will be shown team leadership tactics that are key to dominating the game. When you know how to play as a part of a team or as a team leader that is when you will start to see huge improvements in your scores as well as your skill level. Many of the best players that you see dominating the scoreboard are not good because they are lucky, they are good BF3 players because they have learned how to play the game properly by getting a decent BF3 strategy guide.

Battlefield 3 Guide - 3 BF3 Strategy Guide Tips That Will Put You On Top

With the recent launch and popularity of the video game Battlefield 3, it has led a lot of us to wonder if there are any strategy guides that we can use in order to boost our kill/death ratios and become elite BF3 players. A quick search online turns up quite a few sites offering Battlefield 3 guides, most of them discuss strategies and secrets which are relatively unknown and offer jam-packed strategy guides full of tips hints and secrets for Battlefield 3. However, some of them are a waste of time and it can be hard to tell which sites are reliable, worth the time and effort, and provide quality hints, tips and secrets.

A good Battlefield 3 strategy guide will offer both known and unknown secrets and tips. Who wants to get a mastery guide that offers the same hints as all of the other guides out there. Everyone will already know these secrets making them virtually useless unless you get the guide as soon as it's launched. Fresh tips and secrets are the best weapons to have in your Battlefield 3 arsenal, and in turn will make you the envy of all the other players who are dying each time you pull the trigger.

Generally, you'll find that there are three different types of sites on the internet offering BF3 guides. Some even try to charge a price per hint/secret downloaded! That is quite laughable, and to put it quite frankly a waste. Some other sites offer you guides that at the time of their release were pretty good, however, the information becomes quickly outdated as everyone figures out the secrets leaving you back at square one. The third type of Battlefield 3 guide is the one that is constantly being updated, you will always have the latest and greatest secrets, cheats, hints and tips as they become available. This is the type of guide you should be looking for, obviously. If you have the latest cheats and secrets, then you will be at the top of the scoreboard after every round.

These guides will work on any console gaming system such as PS3, or Xbox 360 as well as the PC. The game is the same on all systems so there are no specific guides out there for your specific system. As I said above though, be sure you get a strategy guide that is recommended by a reliable source, or you will probably just be wasting time and money, with absolutely nothing to show for it. You still won't be at the top of the scoreboard, and you will be wondering why. The reason is simple, get a guide that is constantly updated and is recommended by the top BF3 players.

I have reviewed almost every guide there is for Battlefield 3, and I am consistently at the top of the scoreboard. I get messages constantly asking me if I am using some sort of aimbot or hack, and I laugh to myself every time people ask me. I don't have any hacks or aimbots or whatever, I just have access to the best strategy guides out there.

MW3 Strategy Guides - Tips And Tricks For MW3

MW3 is the latest Call of Duty game to hit the shelves for PS3 and Xbox 360. Shortly after it was released we started to see quite a few MW3 strategy guides being released as well. Most of these guides make the claim that you will become a pro MW3 player literally overnight, however only a select few of them actually deliver on that promise. In this article I will discuss some of the major things to look for when obtaining a strategy guide for MW3, as well, you will learn some of my favorite tips and tricks.

One of the major things you should look for in a strategy guide is whether or not the guide is constantly updated with the latest secrets available. Who wants to get a guide that is out of date or that reveals tips and tricks that everyone already knows about? Not me that's for sure. When I went looking for a MW3 guide the first guide I obtained was pretty good, it revealed to me some of the things that I had been missing in my game play and allowed me to be a better player as it stated. However, there was one major thing I noticed, everyone else already knew most of the strategies shown in the guide. This rendered the guide all but useless in my eyes as I was battling other players, even my own teammates at times for the best positions and spots on the map.

So I kept searching for other guides that were out there, then I stumbled upon what I considered the holy grail of MW3 guides. It not only showed me awesome tips, but it also was being updated daily showing the latest secret finds in the game and things most players didn't even know existed in the game. The strategies were top notch and the support was second to none, I had finally found what I had been looking for and it didn't take long for my friends to notice my awesome kill/death ratio. They were begging me to show them what I knew and how I was staying alive so long to rack up all of the kills I was getting.

I told them that anyone can do it, and I pointed them in the direction of the guide I was using. Now a month later, when we play a map, we win 90% of the time because we have access to some of the best tips available. So I decided to help others that may be in the same situation I was in. I realized that almost everyone playing the game wished that they had a source of information that would allow them to dominate MW3, because we all know winning is a lot more fun then losing.

Modern Warfare 3 Strategy Guide - Learn The Latest MW3 Strategies

Just recently Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 was launched and with the launch of this new game comes new strategies to survive in this one of a kind first person shooter. There are some brand new strategy guides available that will increase your kill/death ratios and in turn teach you how to become the best of the best. You will become an elite MW3 soldier. After searching online, a few MW3 strategy guides caught my attention, and I learned a few things while doing my research that I thought I would pass on to anyone else looking for a Modern Warfare 3 guide.

A decent MW3 strategy guide will offer high definition videos as well as a PDF guide showing you exactly how to perform the hints, tips, secrets and cheats. One particular guide was so thorough that it left me speechless when I was literally at the top of the scoreboard after every round. The other players were calling me a hacker and accusing me of having an aim bot. It seemed like only I knew these techniques and no one else playing could even get close to me. That felt quite awesome to say the least. I had never thought of trying a strategy guide before, but now I will never play another online FPS without having one by my side. I was the envy of all the other players who were dying every time I pulled the trigger on them. It feels great!

If you decide to get yourself a strategy guide for MW3 there are a few things to keep in mind. First, you will discover that there are a few different types of guides out there. There are the ones that just offer basic tips and hints that normally you will figure out after a couple of hours playing anyway. Then there are the guides that show you a few secrets and cheats that allow you to get to the top of the scoreboard for a bit until others figure it out and the strategy becomes useless. Third, there are membership sites that constantly update their database of cheats, hints, secrets and tips and offer HD video of everything along with a guide that you can keep beside you while you are playing. This is the type of Modern Warfare 3 guide that I found to be the most helpful. I find that the best strategies are the newest strategies, the ones not many people know about and aren't talked about in the forums. So obviously a site that constantly updates there strategies and tips will continue to guide you in the right direction long after the other guides become outdated.

To make things a bit easier for you, I have taken the time to review just about every strategy guide available for MW3, and I will pass this information on to you so you don't waste your time searching and trying to find the best one out there. Like I said, I am consistently at the top of the scoreboard and I am always getting messages asking me if I am using some sort of aim bot or hack, this still makes me laugh every time because I don't have any hacks or aim bots or whatever, I just have access to the best MW3 strategy guides available. Just because I took the time to learn the game, and learned about certain weaknesses doesn't make me a hacker, it makes me a finely tuned elite MW3 soldier.

Modern Warfare 3 Strategy - 5 Helpful Hints For MW3

Modern Warfare 3 is the latest Call of Duty game on the market. It is surprisingly quite different from the rest of the Call of Duty games in that it requires the player to focus a bit more on teamwork and a bit less on running around like Rambo with their guns firing on full auto like some Hollywood movie. It requires you to think about your strategy and tactics at every step of the game. Even the single player campaign focuses more on teamwork and weapon accuracy. However most people purchase these first person shooter games for the multiplayer aspect of the game. Nothing is more challenging in multiplayer mode than MW3.

The first thing you want to focus on when beginning a multiplayer mission is your class. You have to set up your class properly in order to rise to your full potential. When your class is set up properly it makes a world of difference, you will get more kills because you will be stronger and faster than most other players in the match. 90% of players don't know how to properly setup their class and when you do it gives you quite an advantage over them.

Your next task should be configuring your weapon properly, there are many strategy guides out there that show you exactly how to configure your weapon properly for maximum damage and kill power. This will give you another huge advantage over most other players as they run around aimlessly getting owned, you will be able to kill them much more quickly then they can kill you because you have a better weapon and know how to use it properly. Knowing which weapon to use and when to use it is a major factor in this game.

The third MW3 strategy you should be thinking about is the map. Learn the common places the enemy runs through in the map and find a place that you can remain undetected and start racking up the kills as they all run around like they have their heads cut off because they don't know where they are getting killed from. A good idea is to have two spots that you can run back and forth between each kill that way when your victim comes back looking for you, you can pop out and waste them again.

Fourth, you should be focusing on your fighting skills. A good technique I like to use is when you are in a face to face combat situation with an enemy immediately drop into the prone position. The natural reaction of most players is to move back and forth from side to side while they aim at your head or torso trying to kill you. When they start moving back and forth like that, I consider it a panic move, and I have had much success with dropping into the prone position and blowing them away. Not only does this throw them off for a couple of seconds, but it also allows you some time to aim for a head shot and put them away quickly.

The fifth and most important helpful strategy I can give you is to get yourself a good Modern Warfare 3 strategy or domination guide. There are a few different tactical guides out there on the web that show you some awesome tricks and hints for MW3. Some of these guides even come with HD videos showing you some really neat and effective strategies to quickly rack up a bunch of kills and come out on top after every match. Most of the people that you play against that are really good are using the hints laid out in these guides.

Outwit the Snake Game With a Killer Strategy

The snake game is one of the most recognizable video game classics. First developed in the 1970s, variations of this simple theme have appeared on game consoles, PC applications and mobile phones. Today, you can find numerous online versions to play right in your browser. While the game looks deceptively simple, it is also highly addictive and requires strategy in addition to fast reflexes.

While details may vary by specific implementation, the basics of the snake game remain the same. The player controls a snake which starts off small and grows as it eats "food." The idea is to eat as much as possible, making the snake grow longer. As the snake grows longer, it becomes harder to navigate without running into your own tail. Once all the food on a level has been cleared, the snake will revert to its original size for the next level. The challenge is to avoid running into the tail end of your snake, and in some versions, walls and other obstacles as well.

Although this is usually a single player game, two player variations add even further challenges. The basic concepts and strategies required, however, remain the same. The main rule is that a player must avoid running into anything other than the food, but that is easier said than done.

Here are a few tips:

1) Make quick, sharp turns.
2) When you need to backtrack, try to run parallel to your snake's body.
3) If your tail is blocking your food, try running back and forth across the screen until your tail is out of the way.
4) If you really need to wait for your tail to shorten, try making rapid zig-zag motions.
5) Above all, try to cover the least amount of space possible. The longer and more complex your path, the harder it will be to navigate around your tail.

The classic snake game comes in many modern variations, including the Tron "light cycles" game, a computer virus themed version, and even one in which your "snake" is actually a bulldozer! Some of these versions include different obstacles, enemies, bonuses and power-ups to enhance gameplay and make for new challenges.

Of course, if you are a fan of snakes, then you can find snake games that have nothing to do with the "classic" version. Do you want to go snake hunting, or send your snake on a rabbit-munching rampage? There are plenty of options out there, in case you want something different or just need a break from the old standby.

Diablo III Strategy

Diablo III is one of the best online games that you can play for many hours. While you are playing the game you can find weapons, gold, mana, find health potions and increase your character by learning skills and spells while building strength and finding new weapons to fight anything that tries to attack you.

Diablo III starts 20 years following the events where Diablo II ends. The Worldstone, which Tyrael protected at the ending of Diablo II "Lord of Destruction", has been destroyed, no longer shielding the world of Sanctuary from Heaven or even Hell.

Diablo has always been based on storyline, but now there will be class-based quests which will still include even more storyline. If you are like me I have been waiting for the longest time for this game to be released. Here are some helpful Diablo secrets that will help you destroy the competition and become a master at the game.

When stating the game be sure to understand where and what all the shortcuts do. Locating and understanding where to get potions and spells or even where to get your weapons repaired or replaced is always a good way to starting a new game.

I have also learned that understanding what all spells do and how to throw them at the right time is very important to game play. Diablo III has new characters such as the "Witch Doctor" that is similar to the Necromancer which raised the undead to fight with him. The good thing is they have their own weapons, skills and magic. The other new class is the "Wizard" which uses new tricks like Disintegration and Slow Time and uses basic magic skills.

During the game you will have to defeat new characters some which are basically like the ones from Diablo II. The "Dune Thresher" is like the sand maggot but more dangerous. These creatures will pop out of the ground and attack you. The "Gnarled Walkers" are like walking trees that will follow you.

Remember when you saved "Deckard Cain" in Diablo II? Well now he has a journal that has information about what really happened in Diablo and Diablo II. The book is interactive and all you do to turn the page is click the bottom corner of the book.

I believe this is one of the greatest games that was ever made it has so much to offer such as world maps such as "New Tristam" and "Caldeum". The game also includes dungeons like the "Tristam Cathedral".

Blizzard informed me that the game must be played online. If you do not have an internet connection "You" will not be able to play the game. Unfortunately you can't play offline like you could with Diablo II.

This book will help you understand Diablo better so you don't get killed or left in the dark. One thing I like about this book is you will know how to develop yourself better so when you get in a rough situation you wont be killed as easy. I believe if you need the inside scoop on being a better Diablo player then this is the book for you.

If you truly wish to succeed at Diablo III and get your hands on the best Diablo III strats, then you must visit the worlds greatest resource. Go to this site immediately: http://www.diabloiiistrats.com/
