An excellent Death Knight spec for DPS is a Frost spec, focused on dual-wielding. This way the Death Knight gains a lot of melee haste, and quite a bit of frost damage boost. However, choosing even one of the wrong talents in the Frost tree may cause your DK to lose some of its damage effectiveness. So, here's a short Death Knight guide in which I'm going to tell your which abilities should be left out from the Frost tree and which talents should be trained from the Unholy tree.
Talents to Leave Out from your Frost Tree
On a Pale Horse. This talent only grants you movement speed, which you don't really need in a raid or in a 5-man group. So, this talent should not be in your DK spec for DPS.
Endless Winter. This is a talent that boosts your Mind Freeze by reducing its Runic Power cost, clearly a talent for PvP.
Might of the Frozen Wastes. You should train this talent if you're going to use a 2-handed weapon as a Frost DK. However, in that case, you should not train Threat of Thassarian, the equivalent talent for dual-wielding.
Talents to Train from the Unholy Tree
The second part of this short Death Kight guide regards the extra talent points, for the Unholy tree. By leaving out the talents that I mentioned above, you'll have 6 extra remaining points to train in your Unholy spec. You should use these to cap the following talents:
Virulence - to increase your disease damage by 30%.
Epidemic - to increase the duration of your diseases on your targets for 12 seconds.
You can train Bladed Armor from the Blood tree, instead of Epidemic. This talent grants you 6 attack power for every 180 armor points that you have. That will grant you a fair damage boost. For example, with DPS gear, my DK has 22,000 armor. If I train that talent, I will get about 733 extra attack power, which is not bad. However, if you train this talent, instead of Epidemic, without those 12 seconds in the duration of your diseases, you might struggle with your DPS rotation.
To close this short Death Knight guide, I have one more thing to say. You can gain one talent point if you leave out Lichborne. Although most Death Knights keep this ability, because it's not bad to have an extra cooldown, you won't really need it for DPS. That extra talent point can be trained in Epidemic, and 3 points trained in Bladed Armor. The 1 talent point trained in Epidemic will increase your disease duration by 4 seconds, just enough to balance your rotation.
