When I first started playing World of Warcraft the leveling process was the experience for me. As the game had just been released, it was new for everyone, so that the endgame community was quite a bit smaller than the number of players who were taking their time to reach the level cap.
Things have changed since then, and now the vast majority of content is available at the maximum level, rather than during the leveling process to reach it. Because of this, every time I switch servers to play with friends or just to experience a change of environment I find myself looking at the level grind as more of an obstacle to enjoying the game, instead of a part of it.
Rather than stop leveling new characters, I've just developed ways of making it as efficient as possible, ensuring that I don't waste any time while making my way to max level again.
I'd like to share with you some of the tips and tricks I've developed for making the leveling process easier and more profitable over the years. Of course, just because you're leveling more effectively doesn't mean you need to speed through it as fast as possible. These techniques are just a few ways of ensuring that you get the most out of the time you invest in the game, as I'm sure we'd all like to do.
1. Plot out your Questing Path
Most important to leveling as efficiently as possible is to ensure that you properly plot out your path when questing. You'll almost always be pursuing a multitude of quests at the same time and each quest hub can include as many as ten or more at one time, which is why it's imperative that you plan on completing them in an order that reduces time spent travelling as much as possible.
Try to handle all your quests in a given area before proceeding forward, so you don't have to backtrack to finish any. Also, if you're looking for materials of a particular type, check if you can purchase them from the auction house before taking the time to find them yourself; this, in particular, can make some otherwise lengthy quests quite simple.
If you're uncertain about a quest, it's a good idea to get in the habit of pulling up one of the many websites with detailed information on the quest to avoid wasting time wandering about looking for something you might have missed. Often times I'll leave a website like Wowhead up in the background and switch over to it the moment I run into something I can't solve relatively quickly.
Try researching your quest chains ahead of time so you can grab any materials you'll need in the future before starting the quest, saving a good amount of time in the process.
2. Gathering
The best way to make cash when you're constantly on the move, completing quests in one region and leaving for another, is to pick up a gathering profession or two such as Mining, Skinning, or Herbalism. The ore veins, herbs, and monsters to skin are quite plentiful. Using a gathering profession will provide you with a nice influx of cash, as most players don't want to bother farming the lower level areas for materials and are quite willing to pay well for what they need to level up a new profession or make an item.
If you're relatively diligent about gathering materials you come across, you should have more than enough money to afford the gear necessary to dominate equal level or even higher monsters, which ties nicely into my next point.
3. Keep your equipment up to date
Equipment is usually quite plentiful at the Auction House, given that most people spend their time at maximum level rather than on the way there. This usually leaves the Auction House filled with unneeded low level armor and weapons either found or crafted by higher level players. Most of these are sold at a pittance, but they can make your character quite a bit stronger for a time.
What I find myself doing is searching the entire Auction House for all the armor and weapons I'll need from around levels 1 to 60 or 70 and purchasing them ahead of time, assuming I can afford it. Store them in your bank, and you'll have a constant supply of up-to-date gear to use as you level up, something that makes most fights trivial even against elite bosses.
If you follow all of these tips, leveling should come easily, giving you more time to focus on other pursuits, such as raids, dungeons, or PvP.
