Gaming journalism has long been on the decrease, which I have to say, is a disgrace. Game news isn't really what it was formerly. Any fanboy can now sit at his computer and pump out articles and reviews of absolute garbage awfully fast now. This is mainly thanks to blogs and also other sorts of self-publishing website.

It used to be that folks once only had a few sites to visit to for gaming news, presently there are loads upon 1000's of sites where people can click to obtain the latest gaming news, unfortunately this also means that just about every ill-informed child has the right to publish their opinion on the internet.

On other side of this, it does give individuals who do have a clue what they're preaching about, the opportunity to share their beliefs with the rest of the world, and to try and keep the the vast majority of people informed on what is really going on in the industry. This can also include workers of companies in the industry, which means you're obviously getting the most informed source on the story.

My Fun Experience of Yahoo Games

Gaming has always been a passion of mine, from the time my parents bought me my first Atari up until now, when I spend hours on Yahoo games. Some may call it an addiction. I, however, call it an appetite for competition. Additionally, I love being transported to another world and using skills, such as problem solving and critical thinking, while playing games. So while I may spend hours upon hours in front of my computer or television screen, my brain is truly being exercised.

Dungeons and Dragons: Homebrew: The Called Shot

In a lot of games I have ran, there is always a circumstance where a player would like to make a called shot at an enemy. Within the Pathfinder RPG, and even DnD, there are no rules or substantial charts for making a called shot against an enemy and what the results are. So my play group and I have devised a simple system that is both player and DM friendly. (Mind you this rule can have devastating effects on your monsters so use with caution.)

So, for starters you need to establish what it is the player is trying to strike that way you can decide the difficulty of the attack. Called shot should be incremented based on the size of the location being attacked, but before you do so you need to understand the difference in what is or isn't a called shot. To make a called shot first the player needs to specify the location on the enemy he/she wishes to attack. (Declaring you want to attack the left flank of a large creature such as a dragon is not a called shot, that is called an attack.) The area should be a very specific location such as between the ribs directly under the armpit of the enemy/creature, or the eye would be an acceptable declaration.

Now you as the DM need to decide just how difficult that specified location is to hit based on a few simple questions. How large is the area being attacked. To help out here is a simple chart based on size location.

Fine: (this is 6 inches or less) +8 added to the base Armor class to hit the area.

Diminutive: ( 7 inches to 1 ft) +4 added to the base Armor class to hit the area

Tiny: (1ft 1inches to 2-1/2ft) +2 added to the base Armor class to hit the area

Small**: (3ft to 5ft) +1 added to the base Armor class to hit the area

**(These area's should only be incorporated or approved by the DM if the creature is Huge or above)

Now that you have determined the difficulty of striking the area you need to decide if the are any additional factors to add to the difficulty before the attack is made, such as is the targeted area armored? if so the penalties for sundering armor should apply as normal. (an alternate option is to add an additional AC bonus to the targeted area based on what material the armor is made out of.)

Padded: +1/Leather/Hide/Studded: +2/ Metal: +3**

**(Special metals such as Adamantine should still apply their damage reduction rating if the area is struck.)

Now the attack is made against the targeted location. As the DM you need to determine if the called shot will be a fatal blow if the attack is landed. If the attack has the potential to kill the target if successful I have devised a ruling to determine wither or not the target survives the blow. If the attack is successful the target must make a fortitude save DC 10 +damage dealt or die. (as i said earlier this can be used to mow down monsters in single hits and forces the DM to run his villains with care, but remember DM's monsters can aim as well, and not all called shots are fatal.)

Alright, let me toss out an example so that this muddy water can clear up a bit.

"Crow the barbarian has engaged Thwak the Orc warlord in single combat! In the beginnings of the fight Thwak delivered some devastating blows to Crow and the outcome for our hero looks grim. Crow decides that he has to win this fight in one hit or be slain by the monstrous Orc. So Crow declares that he wants to make a called shot using his greatsword and cleave it into the throat of the mighty Orc. Thwak has an initial armor class of 20 but striking him in the throat is far more difficult than just striking him outright and the throat is a Fine Target increasing Thwaks armor class by an additional +8, making his adjusted AC 28, Thankfully for Crow the area is unarmored so no additional adjustments need to be made to strike the area. So Crow makes his attack. Crow is +14 to hit with his enchanted Greatsword and rolls a 16. (14+16 = 30) Crow lands a mighty cleave into the throat of Thwak. (Now obviously a greatsword to the throat has the potential to be fatal so this attack will force a fortitude save.) Crow's damage when wielding his greatsword is 2d6+8, so he rolls damage normally as he would with any attack. Crow deals 14 points of damage to the throat of Thwak and forces a fortitude save difficulty 10+ damage dealt so Thwak then needs to roll his fortitude save and come up with a total of 24 or above to survive the attack. Thwak has a +10 to his fortitude save but only rolls a 4 on his save, failing the check and getting his head removed as Crow shears his head from his shoulders."

This rule may take some time to become familiar with but has the potential to increase the flavor of your combat scenes by forcing your play group to do more than just roll dice and tell you damage. This rule can be utilized by any attack that requires an attack roll, even touch/ranged touch spells!

The Biology of An Orc

Orcs have a very distinct appearance, one that is bestial and frightful, inhuman to be sure yet still bipedal, creatures of nightmare that seem to typify our greatest fears. What kind of biology and details of anatomy might best exemplify these traits? Are there any models in our real world that could give us information that would help us design and create more accurate goblins and orcs?

While bipedal, orcs are clearly not human. They appear to be more related our simian cousins, with greater strength, different morphologies and such. Which great ape would an orc most likely resemble? Perhaps they are a mixture of the human and the gorilla, with greater jaws, massive shoulders and backs, smaller legs and deep chests. I like the idea that as an orc grows in power his skin changes color, much as the alpha gorilla would turn silver. Perhaps orcs are light green at birth, and their color ever darkens until they are pitch black upon their ultimate supremacy and size.

It would make sense then that goblins are born more like gibbons, and as they grow more powerful they increase in size and strength so that they appear to be more like chimpanzees, small, wiry, disproportionately powerful. They would have less jaw strength, greater motion and flexibility, greater speed even, trading the power and strength of an orc for the nimble agility of a chimpanzee.

This would also accord well with their new life spans, which is postulated to explain their violence and lack of culture. Gorillas live from thirty five years to fifty, depending on whether they're in captivity or not, which means that it accords well with orcs as well.

So an orc could be born little larger than a chimpanzee, light green, feckless and weak, and only with experience, with age, with the accumulation of power would they grow in size, until they became chieftains or leaders who would be the size of fully grown gorillas, weighing hundreds of pounds and with dark, charcoal skin, matt black and stretched over their great musculature. What Kind of Environment Would Give Rise to Orcs?

When you imagine orcs, you no doubt picture the ferocious hordes emerging from Mordor in Lord of the Rings, or their variants from any other blasted location which would not appear to be able to support life of any kind. Is there a connection between these environments and orcish nature? Could we begin to understand orc nature as dictated by these circumstances, could we stop thinking of them as inherently evil by nature, and instead simply martial due to their homelands?

If we look to other martial societies that have occurred in our own worlds, we can turn to the Mongolians and the Apache for similar outlooks. These were tribes or bands of people who were forced to subsist on lands that made living hard. These environments were such that they were not able to settle down in great numbers and form large cities, but rather were forced to move constantly in order to keep up with the herds from which they derived their nutrition and wealth. Forced to always move, living precariously between starvation and war, they became warlike so as to be able to raid each other for wealth, to be able to protect themselves from the raiding of others.

If you think about it, there are few warlike societies that come from verdant, rich lands, where the food is easily collected and wealth is abundant. People who grow in these lands turn their minds instead to culture and family, to amassing wealth through work and industry, to trade and civilization. They don't need to risk their lives at war if they can simply work hard and live a good life. It is these societies that the other more warlike ones target.

Thus, when looking at orcs, it makes complete sense to stipulate that their traditional homeland would be mountains or steppes, places where they could not amass great numbers, could not easily acquire wealth, where they would have to be fractious and violent, until, finally united by a leader, they would be able to turn all their violence and energy outward, and destroy the civilized world before them in one great battle.

The Exact Distinctions Between Softball and Baseball

Base paths - The base paths in softball are some feet shorter than those in baseball. When pitchers throw from 35 feet, the bases typically are 55 feet apart; when pitchers deliver balls from 40 feet, the bases are often 60 feet apart. The smaller base paths consequently create a smaller infield area, which has an effect on the defense of the infielders.

Field size - Outfield dimensions vary greatly. Perhaps the most common distance at home plate to the outfield fence in softball is 150 feet for the younger kids, while for the teens it reaches to 225 to 250 feet.

Scale of the ball - A regulations softball is significantly bigger than a regulation baseball. A softball measures between 11.88 and 12.13 inches in circumference and weighs between 6.25 and 7.00 ounces; a baseball measures between 9.00 and 9.25 inches in circumference and weighs between 5.00 and 5.25 ounces.

Sometimes, leagues for the youngest softball players use smaller and softer softballs, because a girl's hand from the outset variety of play isn't large enough to grip and throw a regulation softball.

Bats - With the youth level, bats used by baseball and softball are interchangeable. In the advanced amounts of play, players use softball-specific bats, that can come in a variety of different materials, for instance graphite, carbon, Kevlar, and liquid metal, to name a few. Many softball programs only allow specific kinds of bats to be used.

The Future of Social Gaming
